My first interest in art began in high school biology class, when we had to copy all the drawings in the textbook. From there I began drawing everything from comic books to pictures of my friends. I began painting, taking classes and workshops in my early twentys. Later my training developed more through the classic venue of apprenticeships. I continue to take workshops and seek out the advice of artist I admire whenever I can.
When painting in oil or pastel I most often use a subject such as a still life, landscape, or figure. However, the elements of form, line, color and texture are my focus. I love the delicacy, vigor, and beauty in them apart from the subject. Portraits of pets and people are one of my favorite subjects.
When painting in watercolor, I use watercolors, acrylic, gesso, inks and other materials on watercolor paper. My approach is to use layers of color, various textures and design structures to create a design that will elicit emotion within the viewer without the intent to establish a theme or message.
My work is often titled according to how it speaks to me. Leaving room for different interpretations by the viewer. Each painting becomes a mystery to be solved by the viewer’s imagination. I would describe my style as more expressionistic than realistic.
